What does it take to become Internet Stars and Dog and Cat Brand Ambassadors?
Do you recognise these internet stars and dog and cat brand ambassadors?
Have you heard of Tuna? Or Lil Bub? Or Doug The Pug? or Grumpy Cat? If you are a dog or cat person and you are active on social media, there is a very good chance you follow at least one of these internet celebrities and probably several others. These dog and cat celebs are all Internet Influencers! That’s right – they have their own social media accounts (ok – with the help of their hooman) and their job is to look fab modelling or using lovely products. They have a large, highly engaged following which means they have the perfect audience for promoting pet products and they often become brand ambassadors for pet related businesses, large and small. So, what does it take to become Internet Stars and Dog and Cat Brand Ambassadors?
How do Internet Stars and Dog and Cat Brand Ambassadors get started?
These aforementioned dog and cat influencers have millions of followers and travel around the world to events. They are celebrities! But how did they get started? Read on to find out more about what is involved from an up and coming instagram star….
Firstly, a bit of context: Barks & Squeaks is a small business, started in December 2017. We were looking for a way to spread the word about our gorgeous gifts, treats and bespoke hampers that we sell for pets and pet-lovers. There are loads of ways to advertise and market your business, but we decided that we wanted to work with brand ambassadors.
So we launched a competition to find our next Top Dog Models. We were not necessarily looking for a massive internet star with millions of followers. Instead we wanted to find some up and coming stars.
We had loads of fantastic entrants to the competition and it was very difficult to choose a winner. In the end, we chose 2 Instagram accounts to represent us for three months.
Twix, KitKat & Crunch
We chose this marvellous trio of pals, Twix, KitKat and Crunch:
Stories of a Ghostly Husky Pup
…and we chose this magnificent, handsome chap, Ghost.
What will they be doing as Brand Ambassadors?
Twix, KitKat & Crunch and Ghost’s first products to promote are our Original Design reversible bandanas along with another surprise product due to launch next week. These lovely Internet stars will represent Barks & Squeaks for 3 months from July. If it is successful, we will launch a search for our next set of top models in August to represent us from October in the run up to Christmas… So watch this space!

Here is our current range of reversible bandanas.
Who better to ask about what it takes to become internet stars and dog and cat brand ambassadors than our lovely winners?
In this blog post, we will be speaking to Rebecca, the hooman behind Twix, KitKat and Crunch and we will follow up later in the week with an interview with Ghost’s hooman.
Twix, KitKat & Crunch
Rebecca is the proud mum of Twix, KitKat and Crunch. She and her husband run a pub together when they are not busy being amazing parents to their furry trio. I had a chat with Rebecca to find out more about Twix, KitKat and Crunch and her experience of managing her four-legged brand ambassadors.
Who are Twix, KitKat & Crunch?
Twix is a 1yr 1month old black & tan Miniature Dachshund. He’s very cool and confident; nothing fazes him! He loves long walks, meeting other dogs no matter their size, destroying toys and sunbathing on top of our garden table!
KitKat is a 1 year & 2 months old domestic shorthair who we adopted as a kitten from Cats Protection in Haselmere. He loves playing with bottle tops, morning cuddles, catching bugs, jumping on your shoulders and he’ll do anything for dreamies. KitKat and Twix came home on the same day almost a year ago so have only know life together.
Crunch is a 5 months old, choc and tan Miniature Dachshund. He’s quite shy around other dogs but loves people and cuddles. He’s a real sweetheart. His tail never stops wagging and he’ll lick you to death! He loves his food.
My husband and I grew up with lots of pets so always wanted our own and we decided to get Crunch as company for Twix.
What do you and Twix, Kit Kat and Crunch like to do together?
We love taking the dogs for a nice long walk in the countryside (Crunch gets carried part way as he can’t walk too far yet) followed by naps/cuddles on the sofa where KitKat comes and joins us. Twix and KitKat also play together a lot, Crunch is still a bit too small to get involved with them!
Why did you decide to set up an Instagram account for Twix, Kit Kat and Crunch?
I thought it would be a nice way to document their lives.
How have you grown your following?
I’ve been learning as I go but I find a variety of poses and pictures keeps people interested and interaction with other accounts helps and that way you meet lots of new friends too.
How do you decide which photos to post?
It’s very ad hoc. I tend to take an opportunity when I see one based on what they’re up to. For example, if they are relaxing in the garden or asleep on the sofa I know I’ll be more likely to get a good photo rather than if they were playing. Twix is good at posing but being young, Crunch doesn’t stay still for long. He just wants to put his nose in the camera all the time! I usually take quite a few then go through them, choose my favourites and usually I post about three or four times a week.
What camera do you use to take your photos?
I use my iPhone 7. It’s great as I always have it on me for spontaneous photos and it is easy to use.
What makes you decide to follow another account?
I love any cat or dog accounts really! There are some funny/silly ones who dress their pets up in outfits or some accounts have amazing photography skills like @sukiicat. @henrythecoloradodog is a favourite as I love seeing cats and dogs that are friends together. It’s also lovely just seeing fellow animal lovers’ pets going about their daily lives.
How much time do you spend each day on Instagram and managing Twix, Kit Kat and Crunch’s account?
About an hour spread over the day.
Why did you decide to become an Instagram Influencer / Brand Ambassador?
So I stumbled across it but so far have found it’s a great way to get to know other accounts and grow your following. It’s nice to be chosen to represent a company whose products you like and use. For example Barks & Squeaks’ products are for both cats and dogs which I love. Hopefully I can help them to grow their business too. The benefits are discounted products and gifted items.
What experience have you had to date at being an Influencer/Brand Ambassador?
It’s all very new to me but last month we were chosen to be ambassadors for the Devils Club and now Barks and Squeaks which is very exciting, so just getting to know these roles.
What advice would you give to others who are thinking about trying to become influencers/brand ambassadors?
It definitely takes more time and hard work than I was expecting. You have to make the effort to get to interact with other accounts but this pays off as everyone is really friendly. And you basically get to look at dogs and cats when you’re online which as an animal lover is pretty great!
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us and telling us a bit more about your gorgeous pups and kitty. Look out for part 2 where we interview the hooman behind the fabulous Ghost.
Watch out for our interview with Ghost’s hooman over the next few days. Next week we will be launching a new addition to our Original Designs range. Then from the beginning of July our brand Ambassadors will be official. Check out their accounts – they have fab photos and love to engage with their audience. They will also have special offers for you.
